Background

This personal project is a culmination from the knowledge gained working on video game HUDs for Installation 01. It seeks to enhance and modernize the heads-up display from the original game while maintaining components and stylistic elements that make it iconic.

An updated logo was also created using the modern design and styling.

Research & Insights

Research approach

Before building a solution, I needed to understand

Strategic Challenges and Trade-offs

My research approach

I conducted observational studies, time studies, and in-depth interviews with 15 associates and 8 managers across 3 store locations to understand the full scope of operational challenges and calculate baseline metrics for completion of tasks.

The Challenge

This project initially started as a request for 6 screen designs to set the style and basis for reskinning the application. This later balooned into a comprehensive redesign effort across 430+ screens and 6 devices.

Three Key Problems Discovered

1. Tedious Legacy Systems

During their shifts, Sam’s Club employees were often interrupted by customer questions while completing tasks across departments. Since the only way to look up product info was on slow, outdated back-office computers, it took an average of 38 minutes to provide an accurate answer for a customer.

Numerous application flows were from acquired software that had lacked input from UX regarding best practice.

Challenge 1: Acquisition tech debt

The Problem: Numerous application flows were from acquired software that had lacked input from UX regarding best practice.

My Solution: Working alongside our engineering vendor PAX, I reevaluated the existing flows and implemented improvements to reduce friction.

Trade-off: As funding and timeline were established I was able to revisit and redesign troublesome areas such as transaction history & reporting.

Challenge 2: Compliance & accessibility gaps

The Problem: The UI did not fully align with Bank of America’s Helix design system or WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards.

My Solution: While the intial goal was to simply reskin the existing application, the scope grew to include a comprehensive redesign to meet accessibility standards.

Challenge 3: Inconsistent UX/UI across platforms

The Problem: Different platforms (Android APKs, Back Office, admin & reseller sites) lacked a unified design system.

My Solution: Working alongside other UX designers on the MBSS team, I helped establish and support a POS specific design system by authoring 63 components and 22 patterns to create a scalable and consistent experience across POS verticals.

Heads-up Display

The full HUD render. Stylistic element opacities were reduced and redesigned to be less distracting and ensure support for widescreen diplays.

HUD Components

Elements within the HUD were animated within After Effects and their animations fully support varying opacities.
